Unfreezing Trauma

Today’s guest suffered relentlessly until something unexpected happened.  This ‘something’ turned her life around and can turn yours around too so that you can start to enjoy family, friends, and life in general.  Tune in as Mary Held shares her journey to unfreeze her trauma and become an advocate for others.

Guest:

Mary Held lived through various traumas as a child but buried them within herself.  She self-medicated with alcohol, becoming an alcoholic which led to more traumatic experiences.  Although she eventually found long term sobriety, she still kept the traumas buried inside.  After some time though, these traumas surfaced as undiagnosed complex (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) PTSD causing seizures which mimicked epilepsy.

For eleven years, these seizures ruled her life.  Then a friend suggested Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy.  Through this therapy, Mary found a way to process those traumas.  Unfreezing Trauma: My Private Journal of EMDR Recovery details her recovery.

After finishing the therapy, Mary went on to earn her master’s degree at MSU, received a post-graduate certification as a Developmental Educator, and developed a nationally recognized program to help students upgrade their math skills for college.

Mary is a long-time resident of the Lansing. Michigan area.
